Ruptured Gel Implants

When a silicone gel breast implant ruptures, it may not always be immediately noticeable, as the silicone gel can stay within the fibrous capsule surrounding the implant.

However, if symptoms such as changes in breast shape, size, or firmness occur, a ruptured implant is suspected. To diagnose a rupture, imaging tests like MRI or ultrasound are often used. Ther FDA has recommended an MRI to assess asymptomatic gel implants starting at 5 years post-surgery and then every two years after. Once confirmed, surgery is typically recommended to remove and replace the ruptured implant.
The surgery for ruptured silicone gel implants involves removing the affected implant and any leaked silicone gel from the breast pocket. The surgeon will carefully dissect the fibrous capsule to ensure all silicone material is removed. A total capsulectomy (removal of the entire capsule) is necessary to prevent any remaining silicone from causing issues. After cleaning the area, a new implant can be inserted or other options like lift without implant or a saline implant may be considered.

Recovery from surgery for ruptured gel implants

Recovery from surgery for ruptured silicone gel implants is more involved than a simple intact implant exchange as it involves a capsulectomy. Drains may be needed and the risk of hematoma is higher. Patients are advised to follow post-operative care instructions carefully to aid healing and reduce the risk of complications. Regular follow-up appointments with the surgeon are crucial to monitor the healing process and ensure no further issues arise
