Oncoplastic Breast Surgery
Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure designed to recreate the shape and appearance of a breast, often following a mastectomy or lumpectomy due to breast cancer.
The primary goal of breast reconstruction is to restore a sense of normalcy and improve the patient’s body image after significant changes caused by surgery. The procedure can involve various techniques, including the use of implants or autologous tissue (using the patient’s own tissue from another part of the body) to rebuild the breast mound. Timing for reconstruction can vary; some patients choose to have it done immediately after mastectomy, while others may prefer to wait until a later date.
In breast reconstruction, the consultation is very important to review the multiple options for reconstruction including implants, autogenous reconstruction or oncoplastic reconstruction. Much of this requires close coordination with the surgical oncologist and breast center. The reconstruction process not only focuses on physical restoration but also addresses the emotional and psychological impacts of breast cancer treatment. Many women experience a boost in self-esteem and confidence after undergoing reconstruction, as it can help them feel more comfortable in their bodies.
Recovery from Breast Reconstruction
Recovery from breast reconstruction typically involves a healing period where patients manage discomfort and follow specific care instructions to ensure proper healing. As with any surgical procedure, there are risks involved, including infection, complications related to implants, and changes in sensation.
